THE NATURAL PARK STRAZNICKE POMORAVI
Since 1993 Straznicke
Pomoravi /31 sq km/ has protected fancy mosaic of natural biotops. The original
river-basin of the Morava river with its meanders and the
rest of its blind branches is really unique. There are flood-plain forests with
ash, oak and alder trees and swamp meadows, too. Unwooded sandy garbled heaps
around railways are protected. In the park, you can see birds like stork, egret,
kingfisher, sand martin, peewit, etc., along the river there live also muskrat,
beaver and rarely otter. Uniqueness of this landscape is also demonstrated with
appearance of rare species of migrant and vivacious birds like e.g. cormorant,
grey goose, kite or sea-eagle.
A bike-path is available in
the park. Excursions through this preserved area are available for groups of ten
or more people. /phone: 00420 518 337 707, 00420 724 162 265 or
bkarpaty@c-box.cz. Running the meandering
river in canoes can bring you deep experience. Fishing license can be ensured /see
chapter fishing/.

A narrow forest strip /nearly 100m wide, 5.5km long, 94.5ha large/
along both sides of the railway between the Bzenec-Privoz and Rohatec
stations is a superb locality of blowing sands and riches of sand-requiring
species of plants and animals. You can see plants like sand grass,
everlasting flower, shepherd’s club, insects like cockchafer or maybug,
plenty of beetles and warm-requiring spiders. Some of them are very rare
according to European criterion. On the sands also lives a green lizard
and a grass snake which is similar to viper but it is harmless! The
surrounding forests of Bzenec oak wood are rich in convexes and talcums

BATA’S CANAL
In the 1930s, a project of irrigation canal was worked out because of
impassability of the Morava river /water in the river often declined and
consequently did the level of underwater/.Jan Bata also dreamed about a
canal Dunaj-Odra-Labe. In May 1938, a project of building of a small
canal according to the Dutch model was made. Building started on October
16, 1934 and finished in the autumn 1938 in the section
Otrokovice-Rohatec. Proposing depth was 1.50m. This water way along the
canal was determined for loading transportation of „lignit“ from the
Ratiskovice mines to the power station in Otrokovice. Nowadays, the
canal works fully in its lengh of 65km including 13 chambers, a water
cable, landing places and a tippler. There are also a couple of boat-houses
and the canal is used for mild water tourism.

TIPPLER AT SUDOMERICE At
Sudomerice, a terminal port with a lignite reloading-place, a so-called
tippler, and a work-siding connection to the railway station of Rohatec
were built. At the tippler, a wagon with lignite was lifted on one side
and the lignite was tipped out onto the available boats. The Canal was
designed for freight boats with the tonnage of 150 tons and draught 1,20
m; the designed boat dimensions were 38 x 5,05 m. Today, the tippler is
a technical monument, you can find a boathouse and refreshment here.

VITICULTURE IN PETROV-PLZE
Another remarkable viticulture village is certainly
Petrov /3km south from Straznice/ known due to its viticulture district –
Plze. The local wine cellars are already mentioned in the 15th century and
later in the 16th and 17th century. There are more
than 80 buidings in the district. The cellar fronts with their architectural
elements of Baroque shapes attract the highest attention. White lime front
walls with blue decoration and one or two-wing doors made of oak wood
augment estetical experience. One of the biggest cellars is 30m long, 5.5m
wide and 3m high. In 1983, Plze was declared the Monumental Preserve of Folk
Architecture. Visitors of Plze can appreciate the quality of wine in many
local wine cellars, e.g. at Mr. Klasek, Svoboda and other wine-makers.
Everybody will welcome you and offer comfortable seating with a glass of
good wine. /phone: :Svoboda 00420 723 738 978/

VITICULTURE
IN SUDOMERICE

of Straznicko and the local vineyards are on the uphills only a couple of
meters from the state border. Those are the most southern uphills of the
White Carpathians. You can find them 3km behind the village in a locality
called Stare hory. Thanks to good climatic and geological conditions, the
local wine-makers can be proud of wine of a very high quality, which can be
offered to you in their wine cellars in the district of Stary potok. The
district is made of a line with 30 wine cellars near the stream and a
viticultural district Sudomerice. Sitting and tasting is offered in these
cellars,too. /Bucek‘s family-see front page, or other wine-makers/

NATIONAL NATURAL PRESERVE CERTORYJE
In 1987, Certoryje was declared the National natural preserve. It
belongs to one of the rarest areas in the preserved landscape area of
the White Carpathians. There are vast meadows of fauna and flora with
high substitution of critically threatened species, orchids most of all.
The scattered trees –oaks, limes and birches - look like a large
informal park. Sometimes there are spring areas with wetland and cotton-grass
vegetation. The preserve is 800 ha large and lies 350-520m above the sea
level. There are 500 kinds of superior plants from which 50 kinds are
preserved. 22 kinds of orchids can be seen there. Certoryje belongs to
the richest meadows of Europe. /there are nearly 110 kinds of plants per
24km2/. Important species are e.g.: Ophrys fuciflora, Gymnadenia
conopsea, slipperwort (Cypripedium calceolus) and irises (Iris graminea
