BATA’S CANAL

In the 1930s, a project of irrigation canal was worked out because of impassability of the Morava river /water in the river often declined and consequently did the level of underwater/.Jan Bata also dreamed about a canal Dunaj-Odra-Labe. In May 1938, a project of building of a small canal according to the Dutch model was made. Building started on October 16, 1934 and finished in the autumn 1938 in the section Otrokovice-Rohatec. Proposing depth was 1.50m. This water way along the canal was determined for loading transportation of „lignit“ from the Ratiskovice mines to the power station in Otrokovice. Nowadays, the canal works fully in its lengh of 65km including 13 chambers, a water cable, landing places and a tippler. There are also a couple of boat-houses and the canal is used for mild water tourism.

6 TIPPLER AT SUDOMERICE

At Sudomerice, a terminal port with a lignite reloading-place, a so-called tippler, and a work-siding connection to the railway station of Rohatec were built. At the tippler, a wagon with lignite was lifted on one side and the lignite was tipped out onto the available boats. The Canal was designed for freight boats with the tonnage of 150 tons and draught 1,20 m; the designed boat dimensions were 38 x 5,05 m. Today, the tippler is a technical monument, you can find a boathouse and refreshment here.

VITICULTURE IN PETROV-PLZE

Another remarkable viticulture village is certainly Petrov /3km south from Straznice/ known due to its viticulture district – Plze. The local wine cellars are already mentioned in the 15th century and later in the 16th and 17th century. There are more than 80 buidings in the district. The cellar fronts with their architectural elements of Baroque shapes attract the highest attention. White lime front walls with blue decoration and one or two-wing doors made of oak wood augment estetical experience. One of the biggest cellars is 30m long, 5.5m wide and 3m high. In 1983, Plze was declared the Monumental Preserve of Folk Architecture. Visitors of Plze can appreciate the quality of wine in many local wine cellars, e.g. at Mr. Klasek, Svoboda and other wine-makers.
