The Straznice castle – originally a water castle – was founded in the
latter half of the 13th century, later rebuilt in Renaissance style. It
served as a watch-house. /Here from its name. Watch house = Straznice./
Nowadays, the National Institute of Folk Culture seats here /see the
front page/. There is a permanent exposition of „Folk instruments of the
Czech Republic“ and the Castle library. The castle is surrounded by an
informal park with the longest plane alley in Central Europe founded in
the former half of the 19th century. Amphitheatres, a summer cinema,
lakes, a dendrology path with educational boards and many benches are
part of the park

The Piarists´ complex from the 18th century involving a church, a
convict and a high school is the most significant Baroque monument in
Straznice. The church is on the location of the former Brethren area
from the end of the 16th century. Interior of the church with its main
altar and six sided ones is decorated by Baroque paintings by Tadeas
Rotter, Jan Lujkas Kracker and Frantisek Vavrinec Korompay and by
plastics by Ignac Moravek. Magnificent scholastic Jan Evangelista
Purkyne taught in the Piarists´ high school and T.G.Masaryk studied as a
private student there

The Memorial of Education was located on the place of former Brethren
school /destroyed by Bockaj invasions in 1605/ in 1992. J.A. Komensky
and his friend Mikulas Drabik attended this school in 1604-1605.
Uncovered bases of the building, a summerhouse, educational boards and
the bust of J.A.Komensky by sculptor Hudecek can be seen there

The mill is one of the oldest preserved buildings in Straznice
mentioned in writing even in 1543. Historical architectural components
like supporting beams and a wooden mill torturing stage from 1601 can be
seen there. Interior is completely supplied with mill equipment from the
1930‘s . The Mill worked till 1975. Nowadays, the exposition about
miller’s trade is open there. /open hours: 10 a.m. -6 p.m. at the

In the time of Turkish threatening in the latter half of the 16th
century, all the town was surrounded by mound and water moat. The
biggest attention was devoted to securing the entry to the town on the
main road from Skalica to Veseli. The gates with spires and side
citadels were built. They are named „Veselska“ and „Skalicka“. Only side
citadels have been preserved. White Tower next to the St Martin Church
is dominating the town. It was built at the beginning of the 17th
century and served as a guard tower. |

In the northern part of Straznice in the middle of the former Jewish
quarter, a Jewish synagogue and cemetery with the old gravestones can be
seen. The oldest one comes from 1648. Mikve – an old Jewish bath is just
in front of the provider’s house. During the World War II, all Jews from
Straznice were deported to the concentration camps. The reconstructed
synagogue with the cemetery is controlled by Jewish municipality.

The reconstructed birthplace of Uprka’s brothers with decorated
plaster in Knezdub is a beautiful example of folk architecture. There is
an exposition inside of the house. You can see interiors from the end of
the 19th century and exhibits illustrated the life and work of both
known artists – painter Joza Uprka and sculptor Frantisek Uprka.
The house is located near „Slovacky Slavin‘ where both artists are
buried together with their follower, painter Antos Frolka. His birhplace
in Knezdub can also be visited. You can see stylish interior with
Frolka’s works supplemented by typical Knezdub needleworks. |

The house No. 52 is a historical monument under care of the National
Trust. It is a building from the late-18th century built with so-called
clay bricks. Their base is flood yellow loam, similar to ceramic loam,
and water. To this mixture, barley awn was added.
The chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in 1928 from the collection of
money, taken by the local natives living in the U.S.A
